Paris Pantheon Highlights

There is much to absorb at the Paris Pantheon. The excellence of this landmark lies in its architecture and the remarkable art adorning the Pantheon in various locations.

The Dome

The Dome

The dome is made entirely of stone and boasts intricate paintwork that depicts the life of Saint Genevieve. The painting further features a few groups, symbolizing the Kings of France. At 83 meters tall, the dome is visible from all parts of Paris! Climb to the top of this dome for some striking panoramic views of the city.

The Façade

The Facade

The splendid facade features Corinthian sculptures and columns. Identify statues of distinguished scientists, statesmen, and philosophers such as Rousseau, Voltaire, Napoleon Bonaparte, Lafayette, soldiers from each military service, and students in uniform from the École Polytechnique! Notice the quote stating, “To the great men, from a grateful nation.”

Paris Pantheon interior

Foucault’s Pendulum

In 1851, Physicist Leon Foucault demonstrated the rotation of the Earth by conducting an experiment in the Paris Pantheon, using a 67-meter swinging lead bob and the central dome. The original pendulum is at the Musée des Arts et Métiers, but the working copy is what you’ll see at the Pantheon, and it’s been swinging since 1995!

Paris Pantheon columns

The Crypt

The crypt is perhaps one of the most popular sections of Paris Pantheon. It houses the tombs of eminent personalities from French history (76 men and 2 women). Among those buried are Voltaire, Rousseau, Marie Curie, Alexandre Dumas, Simone Veil, Antoine Veil, and more. Take a look at the exhibition that provides deeper insight into the lives and works of these personalities!
