All You Need to Know About Getting to Palace of Fontainebleau

Nestled in the town of Fontainebleau, just 55 km southeast of Paris, France, the Château de Fontainebleau reigns as a historical treasure. It occupies a central position within the town, surrounded by Fontainebleau's streets. The Château's location allows easy access to the Fontainebleau Palace Gardens. Perched near the banks of a serene river Loing, the palace offers stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape. 

By Bus

Best for: Budget-conscious travelers

Travel time: 1 hr to 1 ½ hrs approx. 

Bus Numbers: 112, 184, and 208. 

Closest stop: Fontainebleau - Place de l'Étape

Frequency: Every 30 mins from 6 AM to 10:30 PM; Daily. 

Board bus 112 from  Paris Gallieni - Diderot, bus 184 from Paris Gare de Lyon bus station, or bus 208 from  Paris Porte de Bercy bus station and alight at the Fontainebleau - Place de l'Étape from which the Château de Fontainebleau is a 10 min walk away.

By Train

Best for: Time-conscious travelers

Travel time: 35 mins approx

Closest station: Fontainebleau-Avon

Timings: Every 30 mins

Board the train on the Transilien line R that departs from Paris Gare de Lyon and stops at Fontainebleau-Avon. Hop on bus numbers 1, 3, or 21 from the station and head straight to the Château. It’s a 2-min walk into the Palace of Fontainebleau from there. 

Driving Route

Travel time: Approximately 1 hour from the Eiffel Tower

Château de Fontainebleau is about a 1-hour drive from the Eiffel Tower. Start by heading southeast on Quai Branly, then turn left onto Avenue de la Bourdonnais. Continue onto Quai de la Rapée, and then merge onto Quai de Bercy. Follow signs for Lyon/A6 and merge onto the A6 motorway. Take the exit for Fontainebleau and continue on the D607. Follow the signs for the Fontainebleau town center, and you will reach the Château.

For a more scenic route, you can take the A4 motorway (Autoroute de l'Est) heading east and then switch to the A5 motorway towards Langres. From there, take the exit for Fontainebleau and follow the signs to reach the Château. This route offers beautiful countryside views but may take slightly longer due to distance.

While there’s no parking facility within the palace grounds, here are the nearest parking lots:

• Interparking Château Car Park: Located just a 1 min walk from the Château. The car park is open from 7 AM to 8 PM.
• Parking Napoléon: This car park is located on Boulevard Magenta, a short 3 min walk away from the Château.
• Parking Place d'Armes: This car park is located on Place d'Armes, approximately 400 m away from the palace. It should take you around 5 mins to get to your destination. 
• Parking Marché: This car park is located on Rue du Marché, 550 m away from Château de Fontainebleau. You should take around 7 mins to walk to the palace from here.  
• Parking Etape: This car park is located on Rue de l'Etape, a 9 min walk from the palace.

Note:

• All of the above parking lots offer parking spaces for disabled individuals.
• The general rates for most parking lots near the Palace of Fontainebleau are €2.20 for the first hour, €4.40 for 2 hours, and €6.60 for 3 hours. There is also a discounted rate of €10 for the whole day. However, prices may vary in some cases.
• If you’re planning to travel via car, it’s recommended to book your parking slot in advance, especially during peak seasons.
