Arc de Triomphe | Triumphal arch honoring French victories

A key symbol of French identity, the Arc de Triomphe is one of the world’s most massive arches. It was commissioned in 1806 to commemorate the soldiers who died during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars. Spanning 150 feet and 162 feet in height, its significance is marked by events like the Bastille Day military parade and the annual Tour de France race.

The arch was originally commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte and took over 30 years to complete. Designed with Neoclassical features of Roman architecture, it also has stunning sculptures on each pillar. An emblem of French victory, it sees nearly 2 million visitors annually. A trip to Paris is incomplete without visiting this iconic landmark and basking in the surreal view of the city’s landscape from its rooftop. Book your Arc de Triomphe tickets to visit this homage to French history.

Things to know before booking your tickets to the Arc de Triomphe

  • While your skip-the-line tickets allow you to bypass the long queues at the ticket counter, you cannot fast-track the security check lines.
  • Since the Arc de Triomphe is located at the junction of some of the busiest avenues, it is best to head to the north side of Champs-Élysées, where an underground tunnel will take right to the base of the Arc.
  • Only the ground level of the Arc de Triomphe is free. You will need to book tickets to climb the monument.
  • While there is an elevator inside the Arc de Triomphe, it is reserved for pregnant women, those with mobility issues, and those with families. To reach the top, you will have to climb 284 steps.
  • Do not miss the museum inside the Arc de Triomphe below the observation deck that most visitors often skip.
  • You can download the official guidebook that will help you understand the history and significance of the Arc de Triomphe if you do not wish to book a guided tour.
  • The Arc de Triomphe is the busiest in the afternoons and the two hours before closing, especially in the summer. To avoid crowds, visit during the weekdays, especially between Tuesday and Thursday, and in the early morning hours.
  • If you want to catch the rekindling ceremony that occurs every day at 6:30pm, find a spot by 6:20pm at the ground level or the top.
  • Avoid restaurants near the Arc de Triomphe as they can be expensive. Instead, opt for street food carts or go a little farther for a meal.
  • Children under the age of 18, and EU nationals under 25 can visit the Arc de Triomphe for free. However, you still need to book tickets for them that will be scanned before they enter.
  • Those who hold the Paris Museum Pass or the Passion Monuments Pass can also enter the Arc de Triomphe for free.

Why visit the Arc de Triomphe?

arc de triomphe tickets
  • Architectural marvel: Measuring 164 ft in height and 148 ft in width, it follows a neo-classical design, partially inspired by the Roman Forum’s Arch of Titus. The most prominent highlights are the engraved names of fallen warriors and the Tomb of the Fallen Soldier.
  • Spectacular view: Located right in the heart of Paris, visitors are treated to a splendid panoramic view of the city from the rooftop. Since the structure is seated in the middle of a plaza from where 12 avenues lead out, it lends the impression of a large star.
  • Historical significance: Commissioned by Napoleon in 1806, the Arc de Triomphe honors those who fought and lost their lives in the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. The names of several French generals are inscribed on the monument. Beneath the Arch lies the Tomb of the Fallen Soldier from World War I.

Since 11 November 1920, the Arc de Triomphe has housed the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After deciding against honoring an anonymous soldier chosen at random in the Pantheon, the Chamber of Deputies voted unanimously for the burial of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe. 2 years after the burial, the idea of a Flame of Remembrance was met with enthusiastic approval which has never been extinguished since 1923.

The names of 158 battles fought by the French First Republic and the First French Empire are engraved on the attic and the inner facades under the grand arches. The names of 660 military leaders who served in the French Revolution Wars and the Napoleonic Wars are inscribed on the inner faces of the small arches. These inscriptions serve as a memorial to the many who lost their lives serving the country.

Definitely the best way to go to the top of the Arc de Triomphe is will reservations. Our flight was delayed one day & we could use the tickets anytime within 9 months. Thankfully we could use it just 24 hrs later. Great experience booking.

I loved the view and the museum. I wish the museum was more explanatory about the context in which the Arc was built. I LOVED the detailed explanations of the figures on the exterior friezes.

Had an early dinner here before seeing a show nearby. The open sandwiches are legit. Service was quick, but they forgot our water twice. Not a dealbreaker, just a bit annoying. Would def recommend for pre-theater eats.

My husband and I came for our anniversary and wow, what a treat. The staff made us feel so welcome, even brought a little candle on our dessert (unexpected and sweet). Had the set menu—salmon starter, cod main, tart for dessert. I’m still thinking about that tart. Pricey but honestly, worth every euro for the experience. Would recommend for something special.

Booked last minute, no regrets! The bus itself is so clean and modern. Tables are a bit small but you get used to it. Loved the music playlist—felt just right, not too loud. Staff checked on us without hovering.

Went solo and didn’t feel out of place at all, which was nice. Made friends with a couple from Spain at the next table! Staff checked in on me just enough. Loved the little details like the chef popping out to say hi at the end.
