Notre Dame | Parisian Gothic masterpiece

The Notre Dame Cathedral, built on the Île de la Cité in the heart of Paris, is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture and a symbol of French heritage. Île de la Cité, one of the two remaining natural islands in the Seine River within Paris, is considered the historic heart of the city. It is known for its Gothic architecture and is one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture worldwide. It flaunts intricate stone carvings, stunning stained-glass windows, and significant Christendom relics, like the piece of True Cross and Crown of Thorns.

Though Notre Dame burnt down in 2019 and the inside is not open to visitors, seeing Notre Dame from the outside alone is an experience that combines beauty, history, and spirituality, making it a must-see landmark for anyone visiting Paris. Keep reading to learn more about this cathedral landmark!

  • Notre Dame draws tons of visitors, especially in peak season. Arrive early for an unobstructed view, without having to battle the crowds.
  • Don't rush at Notre Dame; take your time to appreciate the intricate architecture and sculptures.
  • The Cathedral remains a place of worship. Show respect for those paying homage and maintain a respectful demeanor.
  • Notre Dame's reconstruction is complex; expect scaffolding and construction around the cathedral. Be patient and respect the workers restoring this iconic cathedral.

The Notre Dame today

Five years after the devastating fire on April 15, 2019, the major restoration challenges of Paris' Notre-Dame Cathedral have been successfully tackled. The cathedral is on schedule to reopen on December 8, 2024. Employing traditional methods and materials, the reconstruction endeavors to recapture the cathedral's former grandeur. While the renovation is underway, you can still appreciate the exterior and delve into its history at the adjacent archaeological crypt.

Although access to the square is currently restricted, you can still view the crypt from a distance. Your guide will then take you to the entrance of the crypt, where, after a guided tour, you'll be able to explore beneath Notre Dame. You'll enjoy a self-guided tour of the very foundations of Île de la Cité, the original heart of Paris.

The fire inflicted substantial damage, affecting the roof, spire, and stained glass windows. A dedicated team of architects, engineers, and artisans leads the meticulous reconstruction. With a projected cost exceeding €1 billion, funding relies on global donations. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Notre Dame embodies architectural brilliance, and its restoration serves as a powerful symbol of resilience and hope for Paris and France.

This was an amazing tour with Anthony. He had all of our names memorized before we even left the meeting spot! He concentrated on describing the highlights of the building and historic symbolism. Dates and names, not so much (although he knew them when asked). Questions and comments were always welcome and he was always gracious. I could not recommend this tour more highly. An iconic monument of Paris with no wait. Not to be missed on a trip to Paris. Worth every penny. Add Saint Chapelle (nearby) as well! Lovely morning!

Immersion was breathtaking and disturbingly realistic. Virtual reality being new to me (different sensations, balance...), my attention was sometimes diverted from the storytelling guide and the extraordinary 3D images. I think I'll do it again as soon as I'm back in Paris. It's worth noting that we visited Notre Dame immediately afterwards. This experience brightened our eyes and intensified our emotions.
