The Louvre Palace, which houses the Louvre Museum, dates back to the 12th century. It was built by King Philip II as a fortress and the building was converted to a castle between 1364 and 1380. After the French Revolution, the palace was converted into the Louvre Museum.

The Louvre Museum has its own secret underground tunnel system, connecting three of its main buildings.

Underneath the Louvre's courtyard lies the remains of a medieval fortress, the original structure from the 12th century on which the museum was built.

In 1803, the Louvre was renamed to Musée Napoléon, after Napoleon Bonaparte. The name remained till 1815 when Napoleon abdicated.

3,690 paintings, sculptures, and other valuable works were relocated from the Louvre in 1939 before the Nazis invaded during World War II.

The Mona Lisa was stolen in 1911 by Italian handyman Vincenzo Peruggia, making international headlines. By the time she was recovered, she had become the most famous painting in the world.

Photos allowed for personal use in permanent collections, but no selfie sticks, flash, or lighting. Restrictions possible in temporary exhibition galleries for specific works.

Videos are allowed in the permanent collections for personal use. In the temporary exhibition galleries, it may be prohibited to take photos of certain works.

No animals are allowed, with the exception of guide dogs or assistance dogs.

Probably one of the most famous paintings in the Louvre, the Mona Lisa is most likely a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo, painting by Leonardo da Vinci around 1503.

This Ancient Greek statue was rediscovered on the island of Milos, Greece, in 1820. It depicts the goddess Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, whose Roman counterpart was Venus.

Venus de Milo

This painting commemorates the July Revolution of 1830, which toppled King Charles X. A woman holding the flag of the French Revolution personifies the concept of Liberty leading a varied group of people forward.

Also called Nike of Samothrace, this masterpiece of Greek sculpture was originally found on the island of Samothrace. Dating from the 2nd century BC it represents the goddess Niké (Victory).

Winged Victory of Samothrace

This painting depicts the aftermath of the wreck of the French naval frigate Méduse in 1816 and was one of Géricault’s first works. Painted in 1818–19, it was originally titled 'Scène de Naufrage' (Shipwreck Scene).

This late Renaissance painting depicts the biblical story of the Wedding at Cana, where Jesus converts water into wine. It originally hung in the San Giorgio Monastery until it was plundered by Napoleon's army.

Officially titled Consecration of the Emperor Napoleon I and Coronation of the Empress Josephine in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris on 2 December 1804,&nbsp;it was completed in 1807 by the official painter of Napoleon.

This sculpture was first commissioned in 1787 and is regarded as a masterpiece of Neoclassical sculpture. It shows the mythological lovers Psyche and Cupid at a moment of great emotion.

Commissioned by Laerzio Cherubini for the church of Santa Maria della Scala, the painting stirred controversy in 17th-century Rome. It later found acclaim, being owned by Charles I of England and Louis XIV.

Death of the Virgin

Michelangelo's statue was completed between 1513 and 1516 with another figure, Rebellious Slave, at the tomb of Pope Julius II. The Rebellious Slave can also be found in the same gallery at the Louvre.

The Salle des Éstats in the Denon Wing is the largest room inside the Louvre Museum. This room was built between 1855 and 1857 and was designed to house the Venetian masters.

This room in the Sully Wing has a collection of ancient Greek sculptures and antiques. The gorgeous red marble that adorns the room was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon I.

An iconic spot in the museum, the Daru Staircase of the Denon Wing was built in the 1800s by Hector Lefuel. At the top of the stairs is a rare Greek statue of the goddess of victory.

This courtyard of the Richelieu Wing contains the remains of the city of King Sargon II of the Assyrian Empire in present-day Khorsabad. They date back to the 8th century BC.

Bus routes 21, 24, 27, 39, 48, 68, 69, 72, 81, and 95 will get you to the Louvre Museum. There are two bus stops right outside the museum - Louvre Rivoli and Musée du Louvre.

Getting to the Louvre Museum by taxi is fast and convenient. The drop-off point is at the Carrousel roundabout, which is very close to the Carrousel entrance of the museum.

If you wish to park your bicycle close to the museum, you can park it in front of the École du Louvre, close to the Porte des Lions.

There are 2 metro stops located just outside the museum - Palais Royal Musée du Louvre and Louvre Rivoli. Palais Royal runs on Lines 1 and 7, while Louvre Rivoli runs on Line 1.

There are two routes you can take to reach the museum - the fastest one is via Rue du Louvre, while the other is via Rue Étienne Marcel. Parking space is provided at the museum only for disabled persons with a valid ID. However, there are many facilities nearby:<ul><li>Parking public le Louvre: 300 meters away.</li><li>Parking Indigo Paris Louvre: 500 meters away.</li><li>Parking Indigo Paris Louvre Samaritaine: 800 meters away.</li></ul>

The Châtelet les Halles train station is the closest to the Louvre. You can either walk to the museum, or take a bus, taxi, or the metro.

Book in advance: It is recommended that you book tickets online and pick a time slot in advance to avoid the long queues, especially during the peak tourist season (June to September).

Guided tours: To get in-depth insights into the museum's many masterpieces, consider opting for a guided tour.

Accessibility: The Louvre is accessible to visitors with disabilities, and they are given priority access (without queuing) at museum entrances.

IDs required: If you wish to rent a wheelchair, audio guide, or other piece of equipment, you will need to bring a valid photo ID along with your Louvre Museum tickets. Any official ID with a clear photograph will work.
