This historical monument has long held the fascination of travelers from all across the globe. If you’re planning a visit, here are the key highlights of Sainte Chapelle that will help you gain an in-depth insight into its iconic stature.
The landmark’s exteriors are characterized by Rayonnant architecture, heavily influenced by mid-13th to mid- 14th Century Gothic styles. Prominently made of stone, the highlight of its exteriors is arguably the 78-foot-long spire which was designed with buttresses and pinnacles adorned with crowns of thorn and crockets. The exteriors are comparatively simpler than the grandiose of the interiors, also featuring religious depictions like that of The Last Judgement.
The first glimpse of Sainte Chapelle’s interiors would leave one wondering in awe. Dripping with luxury and magnificence, each section is carefully designed with vibrant colors to depict a part of Christ’s journey and sacrifice. It’s a challenge to focus on anything other than the stunning stained glass windows, but there’s more than meets the eye. The ‘Dado’ features rich motifs and wall hangings, above which one can find larger statues of Peter’s 12 Apostles.
This landmark is divided into two primary areas: the lower and upper Chapels. The lower part was reserved for the Palace staff and royal subjects; one can observe the sober designs, gilded architecture and small windows. The upper chapel was exclusively for the King and his family. The distinction is clear as compared to the lower half; it’s beautifully adorned with the iconic stained glass windows, high ceiling and choir section.
It’s impossible not to be filled with awe at first sight of the 15 towering windows; Sainte Chapelle’s stained glass windows are considered to be some of the finest works of art in the history of the world. Dominated by shades of blue, purple, yellow and red, these windows narrate the New Testament, covering Christ’s infancy, John the Evangelist and The Passion. In the midst of this lies the Rose Window that depicts the story of St. John and Christ.
Last access: 40 minutes before the monument closes.
It is closed on 1 May, 25 December and 1 January.
