History of The Great Stables

The Great Stables, or Les Grandes Écuries, were commissioned by Louis-Henri, Duke of Bourbon, in 1719. Architect Jean Aubert was entrusted with the project, and construction began in 1721. The complex was completed in 1735, showcasing a captivating mix of Baroque and neoclassical architectural styles.

During the 18th century, the Great Stables symbolised power and prestige. Housing the King's finest horses and skilled equestrians, the complex showcased the royal family's equestrian prowess as well as their love for fine arts and architecture.

Due to the eventual French Revolution, the Chantilly estate was confiscated by French authorities, and many of the horses and equipment were sold off, leaving the stables in disarray. However, upon the return of King Louis XVIII to the throne, the estate was gradually restored to its former glory.

Finally, in 1982, the Great Stables was listed as a historic monument, and the idea of transforming the space into a living museum dedicated to the horse was born.

Under the guidance of Yves Bienaimé, a renowned horse breeder and former rider, and with the financial support of the Aga Khan, the Living Museum of the Horse was created in 2013. The museum opened in 1986, showcasing over 200 items and 30 breeds, celebrating the long-standing relationship between humans and horses.
